Why You Should Visit Portugal Now

The walled village of Obidos.

One of the most defining things I heard during a recent 7-night trip to Portugal was that “500 years ago, Portugal discovered the world, just now the world is discovering Portugal.” This couldn’t have been more true for me. I went to Portugal knowing that it is becoming increasingly popular, and I really wanted to understand what it had to offer (with the help of my on-the-ground partner, Mr. Travel Portugal). On my departure I felt like I had rediscovered an old love…one I had never met before. It felt so welcoming and familiar and yet different than any other European destination I had experienced. Learn about my experience and why you should visit Portugal now below:

Why Portugal?

Culture, beauty, food, history, wine, beaches, architecture, religion, nature, and adventure.

Porto…Unesco World Heritage Site and the namesake of port wine.

Who will enjoy Portugal?

Honeymooners, families, wine lovers, girls/guys trips, active travelers, loungers, foodies and more. I came away believing that there is a part of Portugal for everyone, and it is hard not to be delighted.

Evora…stunning sunsets among Roman and medieval ruins.

How to Experience Portugal

  • Customized – Just the way you like it? Family focused.  Food and Wine focused?  History and culture?  However you want it.
  • River Cruise – Some of the best lines including Tauck and Uniworld will be delighted to host you.
  • Small Group Escorted Journeys – Several luxury tour companies would be happy to bring you the highlights.
  • Beach Experience – Just want to get away and relax? Portugal has coast line over half the main land as well as the Azores Islands.

How Long to Spend in Portugal

Though you can cover a lot of territory in a week I would highly suggest giving it 10 days.  I feel like I just started to understand and fall in love with each destination as we were leaving it.

What Destinations Pair Well with Portugal

Many travelers pair Portugal with another destination, though it can absolutely be its own trip. Spain is the go-to pairing because of the proximity. You could also do something more diverse, like Morocco, Paris, or Switzerland.

What is the lodging like in Portugal?

It may feel like a repeat but you can really have it all.  Luxury resort, historic castle, or stand alone cottage…Portugal has everything.  Not to mention, one of its best traits (at least for now) is the relative value you find when it comes to accommodations.  Some top properties:

At all of these fabulous properties as well as many others, Catherine Parkin Travel can bring you exclusive amenities you can’t find elsewhere at many of the most coveted hotels and resorts throughout the country.  You can count on us and our fabulous partners to bring you the best fit for your traveling party at the best value.
